The Bell X-1, piloted by Chuck Yeager on 14 October 1947, became the first airplane to fly faster than the speed of sound and was air-launched from 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) from a WWII bomber; Yeager named the aircraft "Glamorous Glennis" in tribute to his wife.
