Normal Ethernet packets are limited to a maximum size of 1548 bytes. Received packets larger than this are normally rejected by the interface card as errors. Jumbo frames support is beneficial to sending large packets, especially where the data contained in these packets either has a time-critical element, or is so large that the time taken to send multiple smaller packets is too great.
